The Brock Wild Green team opened the 2018-19 season on the
road against the always tough Kawartha Coyotes on Sunday afternoon with a huge 6-3
victory!
The 1st period was a seesaw battle with both teams exchanging scoring chances early and often. The Wild would get on the board first with a nice individual effort by Cole Oke making a nice deke to put one past the Coyotes goalie to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes would come right back less than 1 minute later putting a nice shot just inside the low corner to tie the game at 1.
Just 30 seconds later the Wild would regain the lead. This time it was William Parry who would take a pass from Cole Oke in the neutral zone and carry it into the Coyotes zone and fire a lazer from just inside the hash marks to beat the Coyotes netminder and to take a 2-1 lead.
Once again the Coyotes came right back with just 5 minutes left as they would jam a rebound just under the pad of Hayden Watt to tie the game at 2.
The period would end 2-2 as both teams played a tight checking game for the remainder of the period.
Early in the 2nd period the Wild would strike again. Brody Bugg battled hard behind the Coyotes net and made a nice pass out front to Parry who would get off the one-timer and then jam in his own rebound for his 2nd of the game to give the Wild a 3-2 lead.
Once again the Coyotes battled back to tie it just 2 minutes later as they would lift a rebound into the top of the net after a series of nice saves by Watt.
Watt would not be beaten again as he put of a brick wall in the Wild net.
Midway through the 2nd period, Brody Bugg would put us back in the lead for good as he took a nice pass from Landen Underwood and put a shot just inside the far post to secure a 4-3 lead.
4 minutes later with Bugg would strike again this time with a beauty deke to pad the Wild lead to 2 heading into the 3rd.
The Coyotes battled us hard in the 3rd but Watt made several nice saves to keep the lead 5-3 lead. Cole Oke would then add an extra insurance goal late in the period with a nice deke to finish off a solid 6-3 victory!
A great effort by all to start the season!
Brody Bugg and Colton Housser each had strong games at Center at both ends of the rink. Both created some nice scoring chances and showed a lot of grit in the offensive and defensive zones.
Our wingers consisting of Damian Geissberger, John Malcolm, Hayden Hunt, Parry and Oke showed a lot of grit and some great hussle with every shift while our defense of Sebastian Kirkhner, Nathan Francis, Hayden Harder and Underwood did an excellent job of moving the puck out of our end and up to the forwards. They also did a great job of getting back quickly after joining in the rush.
Hayden Watt had a strong showing in net making a lot of big saves and got better and better as the game went along.
Great effort everyone! Next up is a home battle against the Manvers Mustangs on Saturday.
