Brock Minor Hockey Association – Call for Members

Part of BMHA’s Updated Governance Model (2025)

As of 2025, Brock Minor Hockey Association (BMHA) has implemented an updated governance model to comply with the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA).

ONCA requires not-for-profit organizations to clearly define who their legal Members are, how governance decisions are made, and how accountability and oversight are structured. These changes apply to all Ontario not-for-profit corporations and are reflected in updated by-laws adopted by BMHA.

This governance framework is also consistent with the governance expectations of minor hockey governing bodies, including OMHA, OHF, and Hockey Canada, as part of maintaining good standing and alignment with recognized sport-governance practices.

As part of this transition, BMHA has formalized the role of Association Members to strengthen transparency, accountability, and informed community involvement in Association governance.

What is an Association Member?

An Association Member is a governance participant, approved by the Board of Directors, who:

  • Attends and votes at the Annual Meeting of Members (AMM)

  • Participates in Special Meetings of Members when required

  • Supports informed, transparent decision-making at the Association level

  • May serve on Standing or Ad-Hoc Committees, subject to Board approval

Membership is not an operational role. Association Members do not manage teams, direct coaches, or oversee day-to-day hockey operations unless separately elected, appointed, or assigned to such roles.

Why This Role Exists

Under ONCA, not-for-profit organizations must clearly distinguish between:

  • Members (who hold formal governance rights under the by-laws), and

  • Participants and volunteers (who take part in programs and operations)

The Association Member role exists to:

  • Provide structured governance oversight and accountability

  • Ensure key decisions are made transparently and in accordance with governing documents

  • Establish a clear governance framework that protects the Association, its volunteers, and its participants

This model clarifies responsibilities and strengthens accountability; it is not intended to provide oversight and solicit community involvement.

Who Should Apply?

BMHA welcomes applications from individuals who:

  • Are at least 18 years of age

  • Are parents/guardians, former players, volunteers, or community members

  • Have an interest in the long-term sustainability of minor hockey in the Township of Brock

  • Are willing to participate respectfully and in the best interests of the Association as a whole

Term and Appointment

  • Membership is granted for one (1) Membership Year (September 1 – August 31) and may be renewed.

  • Members are approved by the Board of Directors in accordance with the Association’s By-laws.

  • The total number of Members is limited as defined in the By-laws.

  • We are currently looking for members to serve from March 2026 through August 31st 2027 for the first "official" membership term.
