Tykes Come Oh-So Close in Loss to Mustangs!
The Wild came out of the Christmas break with a battle against the Manvers Mustangs on December 30th in Sunderland.

The Wild were coming off a couple tough losses prior to the break and were eager to start the second half of the season on a winning note.

The Wild came out strong in the 1st period as they got some nice scoring chances and kept the Mustangs in check for the first half of the period. The Wild would be rewarded midway through the period as Malcolm would outrace 2 Mustang defenders to get to the loose puck and hammer it into the top right corner of the net to give the Wild a 1-0 lead.

But the Mustangs would get it back 1 minute later. The Mustangs would get loose in the Wild zone and fire a hard shot that Parry got a piece off but just not quite enough as the puck would trickle just over the line to tie the game at 1-1 after one period of play.

In the 2nd period the Wild continued to battle hard but just could not get the puck to go in. The Mustangs were able to counter the Wild attack with a couple tough goals late in the period. The first being a hard shot from the point that would somehow go through a maze of players before finding the back of the net. Parry was unable to see the puck through the wall of players in front.

The second one was a hard back-hander that snuck through Parry’s five-hole to secure a 3-1 lead for the Mustangs going into the 3rd.

The Wild would continue to battle into the 3rd and would not go down without a fight.

Parry made some beauty saves to keep the game within reach while the Wild defense stepped up big time to get the puck out of our end.

Late in the period the Wild would finally strike. The line of Smith, Stewart and Brock would work the puck around deep in the Mustangs zone putting intense pressure on the Mustangs defense. Then Smith would get the puck to Stewart who would rifle a high blast into the top corner to narrow the lead to 3-2 with just 4 minutes left.

The Wild would continue to battle, trying to get the equalizer but the Mustangs goalie made some nice saves to keep the Mustangs lead at one.

The Mustangs continued to counterattack but Parry made some more great saves late to keep the Wild hopes alive.

In the final minute the trio of Malcolm, Pearce and Stewart took the puck into the Mustangs zone with hopes of getting the tying goal but fired just wide of the Mustangs goal.

The Wild continued to press hard with all 5 players pinching in down low to try to jam home the winner but the Mustangs were able to chip it out to their star player in the final 40 seconds. He would then go in all alone and fire one just past the outstretched pad of Parry to lock up the 4-2 victory and break the hearts of the Wild faithful as the Wild would fall once again in yet another hard fought battle.

Despite the loss the Wild battled hard right to the final buzzer and showed a lot of great work ethic. Our defense of Kirkos, Davidson, Lynch and Cresanto were solid all game breaking up plays, sending the puck out of our end and clearing rebounds.

Our forwards were ferocious in their attack all game long and had several chances to score. Malcolm and Stewart provided the scoring for the Wild while Pearce, Smith and Slama also had some great scoring chances.

Brock, Benge, Payne and Giles all played a gritty game at both ends of the rink, with some great back-checking to help our defense clear the zone and aggressive fore-checking in the Mustangs zone, battling in the corners and along the boards.

Parry was solid in net making some key saves especially in the 3rd period.

Mason Stewart was named the Ferell player of the game for his hard work and great hussle as well as his sensational goal.

Next up for the Wild is back to back games against 2 tough opponents this weekend. On Saturday the Wild will travel to Ops to take on the Kawartha White Coyotes. Then the Wild are right back at it again on Sunday this time in Bobcaygeon against the number 2 ranked Sturgeon Thunder. Blake Brock will start in goal on Saturday while Eric Parry will return to the net on Sunday.

The Wild continue to show improvements with each and every game. Keep on working hard and the Wins will come! Let’s go Wild!!
