Tykes Win Silver at Bob Black Memorial!
The Brock Wild travelled to Oshawa this past weekend to participate in the Bob Black Memorial tournament and came home with the Silver Medal after 4 hard fought games!

In the first game the Wild took on our division rivals the Durham Crusaders in an early morning (7:00am) affair.

The first period was very close as both teams exchanged scoring chances early. Blake Brock made some nice saves to keep the Crusaders off the board until late in the period when the Crusaders would strike with 4 minutes left as their star player #8 scooped up a rebound to put it just past the outstretched pad of Blake to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead after 1.

The Wild would come on strong in the 2nd and would be rewarded 3 minutes in as Bradley Pearce would battle through 2 Crusader defensemen to get a beauty shot off and tie the game at 1-1.

But the Crusaders would come right back at us, as they would beat Blake after a scramble in front of the Wild net to regain the 2-1 lead. The remainder of the 2nd was back and forth with some nice chances at both ends but the score would remain 2-1 heading into the 3rd.

The Crusaders would get a break early in the 3rd as they would sneak in on a 2 on 1 and finish it off with a nice deke to extend the Crusaders lead to 3-1.

But the Wild would not give up. They battled hard and would strike just 2 minutes later. Nathan Giles carried the puck into the Crusaders end and made a nice feed to John Malcolm who would fire a hard shot that was stopped by the Crusaders net-minder but Eric Parry was going hard to the net for the rebound and pounded it in to narrow the lead to 3-2!

The Wild would get some more nice chances but just could not find the back of the net. The Crusaders would add 2 more goals late in the period as their star #8 would get loose on a couple of late breakaways and made some beauty moves to deke the puck past Blake for a 5-2 victory.

Bradley Pearce would earn Ferrel Player of the Game honors as he was a beast all game long driving hard to the net and getting a nice goal in the process.

A tough start for the Wild squad but nothing our team could not bounce back from.

After a hearty breakfast, the Wild would be back in action again for an afternoon tilt with the mighty Clarington Thunder.

The Wild came out strong early getting several chances and would be rewarded halfway into the period as John Malcolm would get loose and fire a beauty over the glove to give the Wild a 1-0 lead!

The Thunder came storming back but would be robbed on several chances by Eric Parry who was on a mission in this one. The 1st would end with the Wild up 1-0.

The Thunder would keep coming and would get one early in the 2nd as Parry would make a nice save on the 1st shot but could not stop the rebound as it trickled over the line to tie the game at 1-1.

The two teams would continue to battle back and forth until mid-way through the period when suddenly the Thunder’s enforcer, feeling he was knocked down on the play got up and dropped his gloves in the middle of the ice trying to get somebody to fight him! But he had no takers as our Wild came to win a hockey game and showed a lot of class walking away and letting him take the major penalty on the play.

The player would be ejected from the tournament as his team would be forced to kill a 5 minute power play for our Wild.

Despite several nice chances the Wild just could not get one as the 2nd period would end deadlocked at 1-1.

In the 3rd period the Thunder came on hard and had several breakaways by their star player #9 but Parry was in the zone and could not be beaten stopping him every time and making some nice saves on the rebounds as well.

The Wild would hang on for a 1-1 tie earning a much needed point in the standings.

The coaches let the players pick the Ferell Player of the Game in this one and they unanimously picked Eric who had the game of his life in goal.

The next day the Wild were back in action again this time against the Innisfil Winterhawks with a berth in the Finals on the line.

Innisfil had pulled off a big win over Clarington earlier while also losing to Durham meaning that a Wild victory would send us to a rematch with the Durham Crusaders for Gold!

Both teams came out a little sluggish in this one with neither team wanting to make any mistakes and not giving up many chances in a tight defensive game.

Innisfil would get on the board 1st with 4 minutes left in the opening period on a nice shot that would find its way past Blake Brock to give the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead.

The lead would hold until midway through the 2nd when the Wild would pounce. Kaiden Smith would break in with Eric Parry and Camden Slama on a 3 on 2 and hammer home a rebound to tie the game at 1-1 with Slama and Parry each getting an assist on the play.

The Winterhawks would battle back hard but were robbed by Blake Brock who was unbeatable making several spectacular saves.

The Wild would strike again in the 3rd. Once again it was Kaiden Smith who would take a nice feed from Mason Stewart and go in all alone. The first shot would be stopped but Kaiden kept going hard to the net and banged in his own rebound to give the Wild a 2-1 lead with 5 minutes left to play.

The Winterhawks came at us hard in the final minutes with several nice chances but Blake made some huge saves in the final minutes as the Wild hung on for a 2-1 victory and a trip to the Championship game!!

Kaiden Smith was awarded the Player of the Game in this one as he battled hard every shift and added 2 goals with some gritty second effort on both plays.

This set the stage for a rematch with our rivals the Durham Crusaders. Durham was having an unbelievable tournament with 3 straight wins and were extra motivated being on their home turf and with their home crowd in the building.

The first period was tight as both teams battled hard to get the early lead. But both goalies were sharp making key saves at each end as the period would end in a 0-0 tie.

In the 2nd the Wild would strike first. Camden Slama, Kael Cresanto and Kaiden Smith would create a flurry in front of the Crusaders net that would be finished off by Smith with a beauty goal 3 minutes in as the Wild would get on the board 1-0.

But just 10 seconds later the Crusaders number 8 would get loose and find a way to beat Parry on the stick side to tie it at 1.

Late in the period the Crusaders would get a lucky break on a controversial goal with just 1 minute left. Parry made a sensational save and got his glove covering the puck on the goal line before his whole glove was shoved into the net by a Crusaders forward. Unfortunately for the Wild the goal would be allowed giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead going into the 3rd.

The Wild would battle super hard to get the equalizer in the 3rd. With just over 4 minutes remaining John Malcolm would get loose on a breakaway and fire a lazer that looked like it was heading for the top corner but was robbed as the Crusaders net-minder made a sensational glove save to keep the Crusaders ahead.

The Wild kept coming hard but just could not bury one. Then late in the period, after being held in tight check most of the game, the Crusaders #8 would get loose and fire a hard shot that found its way just inside the far post to secure a 3-1 lead for the Crusaders.

Despite a hard push by the Wild in the final minutes, we just could not get one as the Wild fell 3-1 and had to settle for the Silver medal.

Despite coming up short in the final game, the Wild should be extremely proud of their performance at this tournament. Coming into the tournament with just 1 win this season, the Wild showed just how far this team had come as they came out with a Win and Tie and 2 very close losses.

Every player on this team played with heart, grit and class and gave us 100% with every shift.

The Wild played by far the best hockey we have seen from them this season.

Both Blake Brock and Eric Parry were rocks in the Wild net making a ton of difficult saves including several breakaways and rebounds. Both players also battled hard in the games they played out showing a ton of hard work and grittiness.

Ethan Kirkos, Borden Davidson and Colin Lynch played strong on defense in all 4 games, shutting down the oppositions star players and moving the puck out of our end. Kael Cresanto, Nathan Giles, Camden Slama and Bradley Pearce all took a turn as the 4th defenseman and did a stand-up job.

Nathan Giles and Karsyn Payne both played their best games all season long. Both showed some great hussle and both were digging in hard on the forecheck every shift.

Kaiden Smith played a gritty game and was rewarded for going hard to the net with his stick on the ice as he would score 3 key goals in the tournament.

John Malcolm showed a lot of hussle and had several breakaways during the tournament while also showing a lot of speed in getting back to help the defense.

Camden Slama continues to be a workhorse for the Wild showing a ton of effort on every single shift. No matter where the coaches put him, he gave 110% and battled hard both on offense and on defense.

Kael Cresanto played solid at both ends of the rink getting several nice scoring chances while doing a great job of getting back to help the defense in our own zone.

Mason Stewart and Bradley Pearce showed a lot of toughness in battling through checks to create offense for the Wild and both did a great job of hussling hard on the back-check.

Rhys Benge was unfortunately unable to play as he was battling an illness all weekend. We wish him the best in a speedy recovery and hope to have him back in the line-up real soon.

Overall a fantastic weekend for the Wild as they continue to impress us with just how much they continue to improve each and every game. Coming from an 0-21-2 start to the season to now being finalists at a tournament of this caliber is truly an amazing accomplishment!

We are very proud of each and every one of you!

The Wild are really coming together well as a team as we gear up for the playoffs!

Keep up the great work everyone and I know we will have more success coming in the near future!
